川东北汉族丧葬仪式考察 = Funeral Rites of Chinese People in North-eastern Sichuan of China

Based on fieldwork and research, this paper analyzes the procedures of funeral rites of Chinese people in north-eastern Pingchangxian (Gexinchun Simazhen) and Bazhongxian of Sichuan, China, with emphasis on their special features. In general, funeral rites come down to humankind through the course of systematization, with their understanding of life and death deepened and development of productivity of society furthered, while they show some unique features different from region to region around the world. The funeral rites in north-eastern area of Sichuan pass through a total series of 32 processes, which includes a major series of 22 processes starting from songzhong (送終) to daochangfashi (道場法事), and the following series of 10 processes after burial from songling (送靈) to shaozhounian (燒周年). Comparing the rites of Sichuan regions with those of Chongqing and Chengdu areas, the paper brings out their distinctive characters, through analyzing the course of funeral ceremonies: selection of a burial lot propitious for the descendants’ fortunes, divination and choice of a lucky day and hour, invocation of the spirit of the dead, covering of the coffin, and conveying the hearse to the grave.
It is hardly possible to find such a rare case as the funeral rites of Pingchangxian’s Gexinchun Simazhen in Sichuan of China, which not just remain complete and unchanged but have been elevated somewhat to an art. The funeral ceremonies in the region promote the harmonious relationship and congenial atmosphere both for family members and neighbors in the regional society as well as inheriting Chinese people’s traditional virtues and functioning as a kind of folk entertainment on the one hand, and offer valuable materials for studying their social consciousness, folkways, language, folk religion, folk literature, and folk games and recreations.
