The new composite bridge which is made of precast concrete panel slabs and steel girders has several connection joints which does not exist in conventional one. Especially, the shear connector in a shear pocket is surrounded by high strength mortar unlike the cast-in-place concrete slab. In Korean specifications, there is no code to calculate the strength of shear connection in such a case.
In this paper, the strength of shear connection of precast concrete panel slab is examined by experiments. The two primary factors of the diameter of shear stud and the compressive strength of mortar are selected as parameters of the test. Both static and fatigue push-out tests according to BS5400 are carried out.
As a result, the behavior of shear connection at failure, the effect of stud diameter and mortar strength on the shear strength of connection and the S-N curve are examined. And it is concluded that the equation for the ultimate strength of shear connection in the conventional cast-in-place slab, which is specified in the Korean code, is not applicable for the precast concrete panel slab.
