This study deals with Johann Sebastian Bach’s Köthen period, covering from 1708 to 1717. Bach studies have long characterized one of the most significant identities of Bach as Lutheran Kantor, arguing that the composer’s life and music moved toward that particular career achieved in Leipzig. In turn, They tend to consider Bach’s Köthen period as secondary and transitory. However, this study proposes that the traditional perspective needs to be reconsidered. In particular, by examining the sources and second literature within a larger musical, theological, social context, this study argues that Köthen period might have provided Bach one of the best environments in which he was able to pursue his own creative impulses with some of the best musicians available at the time.
