Teenage single mothers have a narrow social network and are psychologically exhausted due to academic interruption, social discrimination and cold-hearted treatment for being pregnant. As a result, teenage single mothers have a higher rate of loneliness and lower social skills compared to average teenagers and adult single mothers. The purpose of this study is to examining the effects of A Cappella applied music therapy on loneliness and social skills of teenage mothers. The participants of this study are five teenage mothers that were selected by convenience sampling. This program was conducted two days per week, fifty minutes per session, consisting of fourteen sessions from February 10th to April 6th, 2020. The data was analyzed by using UCLA Loneliness Scale and Korean Social Skill Rating System. The program’s pre and post scores are compared using Wilcoxon’s signed-ranks. Additionally, participants’ reactions were qualitatively analyzed during sessions to aid in a more comprehensive understanding of the quantitative analysis of the study. The results of this study are summarized as follows. The quantitative results of the study showed that music therapy using A cappella had a positive effect on social skills and decrease in loneliness of single teenage mothers. In particular, among social skills sub-variables, cooperation and self-control are statistically significant. Qualitative content analysis result for loneliness indicates that participants perceived less loneliness after accomplishing beautiful harmony and building positive relationships through A Cappella. The results of qualitative analysis for social skills indicated that participants felt musical support by singing together and hearing the resonance of their voices and trying to control their own voice while listening to others. This synergy between them was a starting point for positive relationships.
