Phonetic tendency is being changed into semantic tendency in view of modern linguistic study. when we consider the purpose of language, it is natural that we are keen interested in semantics. The' fields of semantics have been developed through various phases: in 1960s, they have groped by the lexical semantics of structuraliam, in 1970. by multilateral theoretical approach with generative syntax theory and lexical secantics, in 1980s, we can expect that they will be complimentarily descrived by including and synthesizing centered on semantics, I have tried to act up to these expectation, The contents of this study can be summed up like this.
1. I divided the semantic relatedness of vecabulary into inclusion, overlapping, complimcntation, contiguity in view of its constituent analysis. I think it will be much helpful to clarify the lexical meaning of Korean.
2. I divided nouns into logical concept such as individual, set and relation.
3. I connected vertically and transversely the semantic relatedness' of vocabulary and logical concept so as to define the lexical meaning
4.Constituent analytical description of relative noun is new approach to define the lexical meaninng of relationship.
5. I understood the synthetic meaning of nouns as nouns oppositions and accounted for it as taxonomic oppositions, polar oppositions, relative oppositions, hierarchy and inverse oppositions etc.
6. Introducing symbolic logic, I could define the ambiguous semantic boundary and make it visible by means of Venn diagram.
7. By chafe's syntactic structure I grasped the meaning of nouns with relation to verb, and divided it into the meaning of nouns the mselves, basic relation of nouns and secondary relation of nouns, This method contribcted to ccmbine surface strvct ure with deep structare,
8. I simultaneously applied chafe's syntactic structure to symbolic structure at the complimentary standpoint in order that I might clarify' the syntactic structure of korean noun.
Inferring from this, I think formal semantics does a great deal for semantic study and it can be expanded to possible-worlds semantics and chafe's theory is helpful for developing semantics, not for means of grammar. The relation between semantics and grammar attract our attention. some transformationalist thought grammar in accdance with semantics and I think it would be better to study it at the complimentary view.
