The present study hypothesized that memory errors does not occur exclusively according to a a failure of memory storage, subsequently leading to inaccurate recognition or recalls, but also according to distortion in memory representation from a strong top-down intrusion of memory interference . The study asked participants to recall the color of a Stroop word where they possibly experience Stroop interference. For the recall task, a color-wheel recall task was used. The possibility of recalling the color name of the target Stroop word rather than the color of the word per se was extensively examined. According to the recall probability analyses for the color of the target Stroop word along set sizes, we found Pm decrease as a function of set sizes while the precision is constant regardless of the set sizes. Further analyses for recall errors, the recall errors according to the category of color names of the Stroop words were found to be more frequent than the errors indifferent to the color names. The errors also increased as the number of memory items became greater. The results indicate that the recalled memory may not be inaccurate even if the memory is believed to be confident, and suggests that the possible memory distortion demonstrated in long-term memory literature
