스피노자와 스토아 전통 ―감정 이론을 중심으로― = Spinoza and the Stoic Tradition – A Reflection on Their Conceptions of Emotions –

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문에서 우리의 관심은 스피노자와 스토아 전통의 관계를 감정 이론, 특별히 감정의 제어 문제와 그와 연관된 도덕이론과 관련하여 탐구하는 것에 있다.
그런데 이와 관련하여 『윤리학』에서 스피노자가 스토아주의에 대해 보여주고 있는 태도가 상반적이라는 점을 주목할 필요가 있다. 이 비일관성을 어떻게 이해할 수 있을까? 스피노자는 근대라는 새로운 지적 환경 속에서 ‘자연에 합치하여 살아감’이라는 스토아 전통의 이상을 재해석함으로써 새로운 윤리학을 구성하고자 한다. 스토아주의에 대한 스피노자의 양면적 태도는 스토아 전통의 유산을 받아들이면서 동시에 그것을 자연에 대한 새로운 이해에 기반한 새로운 윤리학으로 전환시키려는 시도에도 나온 것으로 볼 수 있다.
스토아 감정 이론의 요체는 감정에 대한 절대적 지배력의 승인이다. 스피노자는 이 논제를 매개로 데카르트와 스토아 전통을 동일시한다. 이 동일시는 무엇을 의미하는가? 스피노자는 두 철학체계는 완전히 다른 전통 즉 스토아의 자연주의적이고 주지주의적인 전통과 데카르트의 주의주의적 신학 전통이 ‘결과적으로’ 동일한 이론적 입장에 이른다는 것을 보여줌으로써, 두 전통을 동시에 비판하고 극복하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study explores the relationship between the philosophy of Spinoza and the Stoic tradition in terms of the theory of emotions, especially the moderation of emotion and its related ethical doctrines.
Concerning this relationship, it is important to note that in Ethics, Spinoza appears to hold opposing positions on the Stoic moral theory. What is the cause of this inconsistency in Spinoza’s approach to Stoicism? In the modern intellectual milieu of his time, he tries to reinterpret the ideal of the Stoic tradition—‘living in accordance with nature’. Spinoza’s apparent ambivalence comes from his incorporation of the Stoic heritage and transformation of it into a new ethics based on a modern conception of nature.
The Stoic theory of emotion affirms the absolute domination of emotions; Spinoza does not see any difference between Descartes philosophy on the subject and the Stoic tradition. What leads him to equate the former with the latter? Spinoza demonstrates that despite the two completely dissimilar philosophical traditions—the naturalist-intellectualist Stoicism and the voluntarist theology of Descartes—they reach the same theoretical positions; in so doing, he criticizes and overcomes both of them.
