自由夫人 에 나타난 1950년대 멜로드라마의 변화 = A Study On the Change of Melodrama in JAYUBUIN

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The 1950s is the age of the abrupt change throughout the Korean history. Melodrama Jayubuin is the text which represents the change of the 1950s. This paper aims at the examination of the meaning of Jayubuin as a new kind of melodrama by analyzing the narrative structure. Basically Popular Genre Convention has doubleness such as fixation and movement. These two opposites are related to the conservative ideology and the fascination by new wave each and give rise to a crack. There is the essential of the text in the tension between fixation and movement.
Professor Jang and his wife Mrs. Oh have roles that symbolize fixation and movement in Jayubuin. The narrative develops into social melodrama representing the social and cultural conflict and the abrupt change in the post Korean War period through the troubles and conflicts between Prof. Jang and Mrs. Oh. The tension is strong in Jayubuin and it sustains the great attraction of the text. But the tension reveals cracks gradually because Prof. Jang shows inconsistency in the series of his actions. It means that the fascination by the new wave is too strong to pacify people by means of conservative ideology.
In conclusion Jayubuin reveals the change different from excessive passion, which is the melodrama convention in the period of Japanese Colonialism. So Jayubuin accomplishes renovation of melodrama genre and has the significance as one of the most suggestive melodramas in Korean Popular Genre history.
