Movement is important for young children and the acquisition of fundamental motor skills is vital to the overall development of children ages 2-5 years. Competence in basic movement skills has impact on the overall health, fitness social/emotional, and cognitive aspects of a childs life. Assessment and evaluation, then, become critical concerns when designing movement programs for youth. Qualitative evaluation should be the primary means of assessment in the preschool years, with quantitative scores used as supplementary information. In addition, health-related fitness coals need to be established and monitored in young children. Children need to be comfortable in an assessment situation. Teachers should take into account the development levels of the children and empower parents to assist in the process.
