The Joseon Dynasty and Russian Empire first established formal diplomatic relations in 1884, after which Russia exerted considerable political influence in Joseon. In particular, in 1896, the Great Han empire royal family took refuge from pro-Japanese factions in Seoul at the Russian diplomatic compound. However to describe the Map of between the two countries Historical relationship. The Map is Agukyeogido(俄國輿地圖). It's a kind of visual report by the two Joseon government officials, Gim Gwang-hun and Shin Sun uk, who were dispatched for secretly exploring the areas of the Tumen River and the Maritime Territory of Siberia. The background of making this map is closely related to the border administration and foreign affairs of Joseon government in the later half of the nineteenth century. In Winter 1863 the 14 households of Korean emigrants first settled in the land of Russian authorized territory. From time to time some Korean crossed the border to continue the seasonal farming for their livelihood along the land of the Tumen River that served as part of the boundary between China, northern districts of Korea, and Russia. In late 19C, colonized the Maritime Territory and finally it was occupied by the Russian Empire after the conclusion of the Convention of Beijing(北京條約) on September, 1860. The relationship of the Maritime Territory of Siberia to pre-modern Korea extends far back in history. After that the Joseon government strongly commissioned to survey the border territory around the Tumen River and Korean people who emigrated to Russia, as soon as the Commercial Treaty of Amity between Joseon and Russia was negotiated in 1884. In this sense, this map can be served as evident sample showing the serious changes of border administration of Joseon government.
