뮤지컬 <하데스타운>의 오르페우스 - 포크 싱어송라이터로의 변용 연구 - = Reimagining Greek Myth: Reinterpreting Orpheus as a Folk Singer-Songwriter in Hadestown

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 오르페우스 신화를 현대적으로 재해석한 뮤지컬 <하데스타운>이오르페우스를 ‘컨템포러리 포크 싱어송라이터’로 재창조하는 방식을 분석한다. 작품 속 오르페우스는 신의 영역을 움직이는 초월적 음유시인이라는 원형을 계승하면서도, 개인적 경험과 사회적 현실을 노래로 표현하는 현대적 예술가로 재구성된다. 본 연구는 이러한 인물 재현이 20세기 이후 형성된 싱어송라이터 개념 및 컨템포러리 포크의 미학적 특성과 어떻게 맞닿는지 고찰한다.
이를 위해 먼저 오르페우스 신화의 역사적 변주를 검토하고, 오르페우스의 주요 넘버인 <Epic> 연곡 및 <If It's True>에 드러난 창작 과정과 이들이 지닌담론적 기능을 분석하였다. 분석 결과, <Epic> 연곡은 신화적 과거를 재구성해 현재 권력 구조를 비판하는 창작 과정을 보여주며, <If It's True>는 개인의 즉흥적 고백이 공동체 연대로 확장되는 양상을 드러냈다. 이 두 창작 방식은 포크 음악의 진정성과 저항 미학을 각기 다른 전략으로 구현한다. 이를 통해 <하데스타운>은 오르페우스를 초월적 영웅에서 창작 과정이 가시화된 인간예술가로 변모시키고, 신화적 서사를 매 공연마다 갱신되는 동시대적 이야기로 재구성한다.

This study investigates how Anaïs Mitchell’s musical Hadestown transforms Orpheus from a mythic hero into a contemporary folk singer-songwriter. While traditional interpretations emphasise Orpheus’ supernatural abilities to move gods and nature through music, Mitchell’s adaptation focuses on his human creative process-the struggle to complete a song that might heal a fractured world. Through analysis of the ‘Epic’ series and ‘If It’s True,’ this paper demonstrates how Orpheus’ role shifts from divine mediator to working artist. The ‘Epic’ songs depict him reworking ancient narratives into contemporary social critique, transforming Hades and Persephone’s love story into a mirror for present-day power structures. Meamwhile, ‘If It’s True’ captures the moment when his personal despair unexpectedly resonates with oppressed workers, transforming individual grief into collective resistance. By grounding Orpheus in the folk and singer-songwriter context, the linear myth turns into a living, tangible story: while Orpheus fails to rescue Eurydice, each retelling generates small changes that accumulate, making ancient tragedy speak to contemporary audiences.
