융과 비온의 관점에서 본 치료적 삼자 = The Therapeutic Third from the View of Jung and Bion

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Traditionally, pastoral counseling has searched for “the third” in the therapeutic setting, which (who) may be regarded as the Holy Spirit between counselor and client. C. G. Jung and Wilfred Bion also pointed out the third, which emerges from the relation between therapist and patient. The fact that both Jung’s concept of archetypes and Bion’s idea of O are beyond our ordinary life experiences shows that there should be the third area which connects the two persons in counseling. Actually, the therapeutic third works in the area of the unconscious, in the form of transference, countertransference or projective identification. Winnicott’s transitional field may be regarded as the third region between therapist and patient. Especially, Ogden’s idea of “analytic third” has given us a light to look into the deep and wide level of the therapeutic third. Jung’s alchemical idea shows the transformation process carried out through the transcendental function of the unconscious. The process of nigredo-albedo-rubedo in alchemy takes place in the space in between. Bion’s concept of O, which is similar to the idea of God, is described as the Ultimate Truth, the Absolute, or the First Entity. The O is the goal which both therapist and patient should reach. As the third, the O connects and leads the two persons in the therapeutic relationship to the truth. Pastoral counseling also keeps in mind the third, which moderates the two persons in counseling and leads them to the love of the Holy Spirit. Although the third does not respond to our wishes, if we try to hear the sound of its voice, it would be leading us to the Truth, the healing point.
