Asian calligraphy is a form of art, and the tendency of its aesthetic paradigms is firmly rooted in social changes. Asian calligraphy of today shows different appearance and characteristics compared to the traditional form in a phenomenal aspect in the domains of creation and appreciation. Especially the creation process of Asian calligraphy, which was solely reserved for flesh and bone human beings, is now disturbed by the debut of Asian calligraphy robots. It is still difficult to call calligraphical creations by AI an art. However, the rapid development of science and technologies makes it difficult to predict the future trends of Asian calligraphical art. Asian calligraphy of today emphasizes social-science elements in addition to natural science in the process of seeking modernization. This means a shift of the paradigms into something different in terms of the forms of expressions, concepts of cognition, and aesthetical mechanisms compared to traditional Asian calligraphy. The most profound characteristic of modern Asian calligraphy is the tendency to diversify visualization. One can find the origin of this trend in the changing ideas of the aesthetics of Asian calligraphy and new forms of expression. Modern Asian calligraphy is going more experimental compared to the past regarding taste and imagery. Therefore, it is difficult to precisely assess the aesthetic value criteria for Asian calligraphy.
In this study, the researcher suggested a new concept called the paradigm of calligraphy in the study of Asian calligraphy in order to examine the modernization of Asian calligraphy in depth. The autonomy within the art of Asian calligraphy alone cannot explain the progress and changes in modern Asian calligraphy. The coming of a new aesthetic paradigm eventually demands exploration from the perspective of art sociology, where the focus is on people. True modernity is not about the concept of time but a transition into a different aesthetic paradigm unlike what they had in ancient times. However, even though the public welcomes the vivid imagery that stemmed from the transition into modern Asian calligraphy, it is still difficult to conclude that it established itself as a generally shared idea in the field of Asian calligraphy at this moment.
