대학생들의 정치적 이념과 환경의식 = 대전지역 대학생들을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 대학생들의 정치적 이념과 환경의식 간의 관계를 밝혀보려는 경험적인 연구이다. 이를 위해 대전지역 대학생 480명의 설문조사 자료를 분석하였다. 독립변수인 정치적 이념변수로는 전통적인 이념구분 방식인 좌파와 우파, 진보정당과 보수정당 지지와 함께 후기산업사회의 특징적인 가치변동인 탈물질주의 가치를 사용하였다. 그리고 종속변수인 환경의식은 언론보도를 통해 대중들에게 널리 알려진 5개의 환경문제(동물실험, 기후변화, 원자력 발전, 4대강 사업, 제주도 강정마을 해군기지 건설)을 통해 파악하였다. 분석결과, 일반적으로 좌파가 우파보다, 진보정당 지지자가 보수정당 지지자보다, 탈물질주의자가 물질주의자보다 각각의 환경쟁점에 대해 친환경적인 태도를 보였다. 그런데 안보논리를 내세워 추진되고 있는 강정마을 해군기지의 경우에는 좌파/우파, 진보정당/보수정당 지지자들의 경계를 넘어 응답자 모두에게서 반환경적인 선택이 광범위하게 나타났다. 다만, 탈물질주의자만이 뚜렷하게 친환경적 태도를 보였다. 국토개발논리를 내세워 추진된 4대강 사업의 경우에는 좌파/우파, 진보정당/보수정당 지지자, 물질주의/탈물질주의자 모두에게서 반대의견이 높았던 것과는 다르게 안보논리 앞에서는 좌파 및 진보정당 지지자들이 탈물질주의자들보다 더 취약한 것으로 드러났다. 따라서 본 연구의 결과만 놓고 본다면, 좌파의 평등주의보다 자아표현과 삶의 질을 강조하는 탈물질주의 가치가 환경의식의 정치적 기반으로 더 설명력이 높다고 할 수 있다. 또한, 개발논리보다는 안보논리가 대학생들의 환경의식 성장을 가로막고 있었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This is an empirical study to figure out the relationship between undergraduates’ political ideology and environmental concerns. To attain the goal, this paper analyzed survey data from 480 undergraduates in Daejeon. As the variable of political ideology, the independent variable, this study used post-materialistic value, the characteristic value fluctuation of post-industrial society, as well as support for the left and the right, and the progressive party and conservative party, the conventional division of ideology. Also, regarding the dependent variable of environmental concerns, this article used five environmental problems(animal experiment, climatic change, nuclear power development, the Four-River Restoration Project, and Jeju Gangjeong Village naval base construction) widely known to the public through press reports for understanding. According to the result of the analysis, the left, progressive party supporters, and post-materialists showed higher eco-friendly attitudes than the right, conservative party supporters, and materialists regarding each of the environmental issues. However, with regard to the Gangjeong Village Naval Base being promoted with the logic of security, most of the respondents including the left/the right or progressive /conservative party supporters chose anti-environmental options. However, post-materialists showed clear eco-friendly attitudes exceptionally. Regarding the Four-River Restoration Project promoted with the logic of national land development, most of them including the left/the right, progressive /conservative party supporters, or materialists/post-materialists expressed objections; however, before the logic of security, the left and progressive party supporters were weaker than post-materialists. Only by the result of this paper, we can conclude that security logic blocks the growth of environmental concerns in undergraduates more than developmental logic.
