윌리엄 레이놀즈의 남장로교 배경과 성경번역 사업

국문 초록 (Abstract)

윌리엄 데이비스 레이놀즈 2세는 1892년부터 1937년까지 35년 동안 한국에서 활동했던 미국 남장로교 선교사였다. 버지니아의 노폭 출신인 그는 부유하고 독실한 남장로교 집안에서 자랐고, 당시에 남부에서 받을 수 있는 최고의 교육을 받았다. 각종 언어에 재능과 관심이 많았던 레이놀즈는 고전어 학자가 되기 위해 존스 홉킨스 대학 박사과정에 입학하기도 했다. 그러나 결국 그는 목사-선교사가 되기 위해 유니언 신학교로 진학했으며, 남장로교의 보수적 전통주의를 배웠다. 남장로교를 개척한 “7인의 개척자” 가운데 한 사람으로서 한국에 온 레이놀즈는 호남지역의 남장로교 선교지를 개척했고, 평양신학교 교수로 오랫동안 가르쳤으며, 신구약 성경의 한글 번역에 참여했다. 이 가운데서도 성경번역은 그의 언어적 재능과 학자적 자세가 가장 잘 발휘된 분야였다.
한국어 실력에서 견줄 사람이 없다는 평을 들었던 레이놀즈는 1895년 한국에 온지 3년 만에 조선상임성서실행위원회로 산하 공인번역위원회 위원이 되었다. 이후 그는 은퇴하고 미국으로 돌아갈 때까지 신구약 성경의 번역과 개정작업에 주도적으로 참여했다. 1906년에 발간된 한국교회 최초의 공인역 성경인 『신약젼셔』를 번역하는 데 가장 크게 기여한 사람은 언더우드와 게일 외에 레이놀즈였다. 1899년부터 시작되어 1911년에 출간된 『구약젼셔』는 사실상 레이놀즈의 개인역이나 마찬가지였다. 이후 레이놀즈는 피터즈, 이원모와 함께 『구약젼셔』의 개정을 주도하여 1937년에 완료했다. 이런 점에서 레이놀즈는 한국교회의 거대한 유산인 1938년도 공인 성경전서인 『성경 개역』이 출간되는 데 가장 큰 기여를 한 사람이었다.

William Davis Reynolds, Jr. was an American Southern Presbyterian missionary, who came to Korea in 1892 and continued to work until 1937. He was born and raised in a wealthy, pious Southern Presbyterian family in Norfolk, Virginia, and received the best education available in the South at that time. Both gifted and interested in languages, Reynolds first hoped to become a scholar in classical languages, and entered the Ph.D. program at the Johns Hopkins University. Eventually, however, he studied at Union Theological Seminary to become a minister-missionary, where he learned conservative traditionalism of Southern Presbyterianism. Arrived in Korea among the “seven pioneers” of the Southern Presbyterian mission, he established churches in the southwestern region, taught at the Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Pyeongyang for a long time, and participated in translating the Bible into Korean.
Reynolds's linguistic abilities and scholarly attitude were best fit in bible translation. Deemed unmatched in Korean language competency, he joined the Permanent Executive Bible Committee of Korea in 1895, only 3 years after his arrival. Thereafter, he continued to lead various bible translations and revisions until his retirement. Together with Horace Underwood and James Gale, he greatly contributed to the New Testament, the first authorized New Testament in the Korean language. The Korean Old Testament published in 1906 was practically his personal translation. Then he led the revision of the Old Testament with Alexander Pieters and Yi Won Mo, which was completed in 1937. In this regards, Reynolds was the greatest contributor to the revised, authorized Korean Bible of 1938, the great legacy of the Korean Church.
