      Wonhyo’s Hwajaeng-ism(和諍思想) includes the core of his speculation which frames the system of all of his thoughts. Hwajaeng-ism, resulted from extensive examination of massive Buddhist writings, also has its roots in Middle way(中道) of speculation which is based on the understanding of Emptiness(空).
      The purpose of this paper is to reilluminate Wonhyo’s Hwajaeng-ism in the veiwpoint of Emptiness and Middle way. On the basis of DaeseungGisinRonSo·Byeolgi (『大乘起信論疏·別記』) and GeumgangSammae- GyeongRon(『金剛三昧經論』), Wonhyo applied Yogācāra as well as Mādhyamika way of speculation to explainin the idea of Emptiness. This is a very important point that reveals the characteristics of Wonhyo’s Hwajaeng-ism.
      The key of the thoughts of Mādhyamika lies in realization of Middle way by identifying the truth of existence according to the principles of Pratītya-samutpāda, and the key of Yogācāra is in revelation of Middle way by analysing the structure of Vijnāna and removing the obstacles of cognition which Vijnāna implies. As it is mentioned, thoughts of Mādhyamika and Yogācāra together aims the realization of Middle way, they have both strengths and weaknesses in their way of demonstration. Observing this, Wonhyo points out the limitation of these two thoughts and at the same time, he establishes his unique system of speculation by making best of the strenghths of these two ideas. That is none but the Hwajaeing-ism.
      By examining Wonhyo’s Hwajaeng-ism from the viewpoint of Emptiness and Middle way, we can look the profundity and logical throughness of his speculation. In addition, we expect to get some tips to understand the origin and the development of whole-Buddhistic tendency, or the typical traits of Korean Buddhism which takes harmony seriously.
