아우구스티누스의 정의와 그 현대적 함의 연구: 기독교적 관점에서 = A Study on the Justice of Augustine and its Modern Implications: From a Christian Perspective

국문 초록 (Abstract)

현대 사회는 정의(Justice)의 문제가 쟁점이 되고 있다. 한국 사회는 정의(공정)로운 사회를 희구하고 있다. 이러한 현실에서 로마 사회의 정치적 혼란기에 시사했던 아우구스티누스의 정의론을 연구하는 것은 의미가 있다고 본다. 아우구스티누스는 그의 저서『신국론』에서 “정의가 없는 국가란 거대한 강도 떼가 아니고 무엇인가?”라고 물었다. 아우구스티누스는 로마와 현대 사회에 있어서 “인간에게 무엇이 문제이고, 무엇이 정의로운 것이며, 어떤 일은 행해야 하고 어떤 일은 행하지 말아야 하는지를” 가르쳐 주고 있다. 이러한 아우구스티누스의 정의는 현대 사회 정의를 이해하는데 초석이 된다. 따라서 본 연구는 아우구스티누스의 정의와 그 현대적 함의를 살펴보고자 한다. 본 논문은 먼저 아우구스티누스의 정의론에 근간이 되었던 그의 저서『가톨릭교회의 윤리와 마니 교도들의 윤리에 관하여』에서 그의 정의가 어떻게 출발하였고, 어떻게 이해되었는지를 고찰하게 될 것이다. 둘째, 그의 저서『신국론』에 나타난 정의론을 검토하게 될 것이다. 셋째, 기독교적 관점에서 현실주의를 대표하는 라인홀드 니버가 조명한 아우구스티누스의 정의론을 분석할 것이다. 넷째, 근·현대 사상가들의 정의에 대한 담론을 비교하고, 기독교적인 관점과 결부된 아우구스티누스의 정의론을 조망하게 될 것이다. 마지막으로 아우구스티누스의 사상적인 위치와 그의 정의론의 착안점을 규명하고, 그 원리가 무엇인지 해명한다. 나아가 이러한 그의 정의가 우리 사회에 시사하는 현대적 의미와 가치를 언급한 후 결론을 맺는다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In modern society, justice has become the most controversial issue. The Korean society aspires to a society of justice. This paper explains that in this reality, it is meaningful to study the justice theory of Augustine, which was suggested during the political turmoil in Roman society. Augustine questions “Justice being taken away, what are kingdoms but great robberies”? in De Civitate Dei. According to his book, Augustine gives lesson on “what is wrong, what is just, and what actions we must take or not”. His teaching about justice is the foundation of understanding the modern social justice. Therefore, this paper aims to examine the justice of Augustine and its implication in the modern society. First, this paper illustrates how his explanation of justice began and presented through his book On the Ethics of the Catholic Church and the Ethics of the Manis, which relates to the basis of his theory of justice. Second, the theory of justice in De Civitate Dei will be examined. Third, the paper analyzes Augustine’s theory of justice that is demonstrated by Rinhold Nieber who represents realism from the Christian perspective. Fourth, the theory of his justice will be compared to the discourse of justice by modern philosophers, as well as to the perspective of Christianity. Finally, the paper clarifies the ideological position of Augustine and his point of view on the theory of justice, and elucidates the principle of justice. This leads to a conclusion on the meaning of his justice and its value implied in modern societies.
