리본 자수를 응용한 패션디자인 연구 = A Study on Fashion Design Applied with Ribbon Embroidery

The creative and quality beauty in fashion trend is getting more valuable virtue than standardization by mass product in modern society.
Ribbon embroidery of which handicraft art can satisfy esthetic craving and individuality has become widen its expressive scope by the creation of new method and material.
Ribbon embroidery is not the simple stitch method but the fiber process in which various pattern and picture in textile is added. So modern designers are applying ribbon embroidery to make high quality and romantic image.
Therefore esthetic value of ribbon embroidery is focused in this essay, and the object of this study is the production of creative apparel design that express various method and brilliant substance. The definition and history of ribbon embroidery, merit and demerit of method, modern fashion design applied with ribbon embroidery have been studied for the theoretical setting. Eight woman's apparel items consisting of four jackets and skirts, two coats, one jacket and one-piece dress and a one-piece are designed and made by the application of ribbon embroidery with floral motive.
The conclusion of this essay are as follows.
First, ribbon is the generic term of narrow and long sash made with string and textile. Ribbon is the oldest decoration that has been used in various purpose from ancient Egypt to modern society. Ribbon was used to enhance esthetic value of human and to indicate social status and class. In the kind of ribbon, there are silk ribbon, satin ribbon, organdy ribbon, metallic ribbon, gros-grain ribbon, wire ribbon, curl ribbon, raphia ribbon, jacquard ribbon, velvet ribbon, corduroy ribbon. Such a classification is made by the quality of the material and weaving method used in ribbon.
Second, ribbon embroidery is the method to add floral pattern and various pattern and graphic. It is called rococo embroidery because it was much in fashion in Rococo period. Its methods are divided into many categories such as Stitch, Straight Stitch, Knot Stitch, Lazy Daisy, Loop Stitch, Lined Stitch, Leaves, Rose & Bud, Floral. It is the so important motive in fashion design that it has been developed with the history of apparel. Because ribbon embroidery can be transformed by the various expression escaping from the established and limited expressive method, ribbon embroidery with flower motive can maximize decorative effect.
Third, in the process of design and production, I expressed the costume with elegant and quality image using ribbon in rich color and soft luster to enlarge the scope of material expression. The main expressional method for flower in ribbon embroidery are Gathered Fold Rose, Twisted Chain Rose, Lee's Victorian Rose, French Knot Ribbon Rose, the method for leaf are Twisted Ribbon Stitch, Sided Ribbon Stitch, Ribbon Stitch, Straight Stitch, Lazy Daisy, and the method for stem are Back Stitch, Couching Stitch, Running Stitch. Especially I presented the possibility for unique and individual ribbon embroidery through emphasizing the vivid motive expressing floral motive as various form.
Handcraft ribbon embroidery not only enhance the artistic value of fashion design, but also has high added value. That's why it can give modern people esthetic satisfaction.
Although the fashion design applied with ribbon embroidery can look nice matched with apparel of modern sense, it takes much time to make such a design pattern and calls for much trouble to fasten the textile every time to stitch because textile form can be changed when needle passes through textile in ribbon embroidery process. And spray must be used too often to keep flower form exactly and it can be washed only by dry cleaning. To supplement such a defect and utilize the decorative propensity of ribbon embroidery more variously, we have to makes the creation of high added value developing embroidery machine to improve the productivity and investigating new material to keep ribbon shape.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

오늘날 현대 사회의 다양화 추세에 따라 패션 또한 대량생산에 의한 획일화 보다는 독창적인 멋과 고급화를 중시하는 경향이 나타나고 있다.
최근 수공예적 기법을 사용하여 개성과 심미적 욕구를 충족시켜줄 수 있는 리본 자수에 대한 관심이 급증하고 있으며, 새로운 재료와 기법의 창출로 그 표현범위 또한 확대되고 있다.
리본 자수는 직물을 바탕으로 하여 다양한 무늬와 그림을 더하는 작업으로, 단순히 수를 놓는 작업이 아니라 여러 가지 스티치를 이용하여 자유로운 표현이 가능한 섬유 작업이기 때문에 현대 디자이너들은 장식적인 기능으로서 리본 자수를 사용하는 동시에 고급스럽고 낭만적인 이미지를 창출하는데 적극 활용하고 있다.
따라서 논자는 리본 자수가 지닌 심미성에 주목하고 리본 자수의 다양한 기법과 양감, 뛰어난 질감 특성을 표현한 창의적인 의상 디자인 제작을 본 연구의 목적으로 삼았으며, 그 이론적 배경으로서 리본과 리본 자수의 정의 및 역사, 기법과 장·단점 그리고 리본 자수를 응용한 현대 패션디자인을 고찰하였다. 특히 꽃을 모티브로 한 리본 자수를 응용하여 재킷과 스커트 4점, 코트 2점, 재킷과 원피스 드레스 1점, 원피스 1점으로 구성된 총 8점의 여성복 아이템을 디자인, 제작하였다.
본 연구의 요약 및 결론은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 리본은 끈이나 옷감을 이용하여 제작한 좁고 긴 띠를 총칭한다. 리본은 역사상 가장 오래된 장식품으로 고대 이집트에서 현대에 이르기까지 많은 영역에 사용되어 왔으며, 특히 리본 자수의 용도로서 과거에는 인간의 미적가치를 높이고 사회적 지위나 신분을 표시하려는 계층의 실용적 요구로서 사용되었다. 리본의 종류에는 실크 리본, 새틴 리본, 오건디 리본, 메탈릭 리본, 그로스그레인 리본, 심지 리본, 컬 리본, 라피아 리본, 벨벳 리본, 코듀로이 리본이 있으며 이는 리본의 재질이나 직조 공법에 의해 분류되어진다.
둘째, 리본 자수는 리본을 이용하여 꽃문양이나 다양한 무늬나 그림을 더하는 자수로, 로코코 시대에 성행되어 로코코 자수라고 불리운다.
리본 자수의 기법은 크게 Stitch, Straight Stitch, Knot Stitch, Lazy Daisy, Loop Stitch, Lined Stitch, Leaves, Rose & Bud, Floral로 나누어지며 복식의 역사와 함께 발전하였다고 할 만큼 복식디자인에 있어서 중요한 모티브이다. 이러한 리본 자수는 기존의 한정된 표현 방법에서 탈피하여 형식에 구애 받지 않고 다양한 표현 방법으로서의 전환이 가능하기 때문에 장식적인 효과를 극대화 시켜준다.
셋째, 작품 디자인, 제작 과정에서는 소재 표현의 영역을 확대하기 위하여 풍부한 색상과 은은한 광택의 다양한 소재와 리본으로 의상을 우아하고 고급스러운 이미지로 표현하였다. 리본 자수에 주로 사용된 꽃의 표현기법은 Gathered Fold Rose, Twisted Chain Rose, Lee's Victorian Rose, French Knot Ribbon Rose이고, 잎의 표현기법은 Twisted Ribbon Stitch, Sided Ribbon Stitch, Ribbon Stitch, Straight Stitch, Lazy Daisy이며, 줄기는 Back Stitch, Couching Stitch, Running Stitch 기법이 사용되었다. 특히 꽃의 모티브를 다양한 형태로 표현하여 볼륨감이 뛰어나고 생동감 넘치는 모티브를 강조함으로써 고품격의 미적 가치와 독창적이고 개성 있는 리본 자수의 디자인 가능성을 제시하였다.
이상의 연구를 통해, 수공예적인 리본 자수 기법은 패션디자인의 장식성을 높일 뿐만 아니라 그 자체로서 예술적 가치를 지녀 현대인들에게 심리적인 만족감을 줄 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.
그러나 리본 자수를 응용한 패션디자인은 현대적인 감각으로 의상과 매치하여 아름답게 보일 수는 있지만 수작업으로 인하여 과도한 작업시간이 소요되는 등 생산성이 떨어지는 단점과 리본 자수를 하는 과정에서 바늘이 직물을 통과함으로써 직물의 형태가 변형되기 때문에 일일이 고정시켜주면서 작업을 해야 하는 번거로움이 있었다. 또한 보관상 꽃의 형태 유지가 어려워 그때마다 분무기를 사용하였으며 세탁 시 드라이클리닝을 해야 하는 불편함이 있었다. 이러한 단점을 보완하고 리본 자수가 가진 장식적인 특성이 더욱 다양한 방법으로 사용되기 위해서는 생산성을 향상시킬 수 있는 자수 기계의 개발 또는 리본의 형태 유지를 하기 위한 소재 연구의 활성화 등 고부가가치를 창출할 수 있는 방향 모색이 요구된다.
