A worldwide environmental crisis due to the destruction of ecosystem has got into a situation that threatens survival of the human race and its civilization. What is at issue is what the human race must pursue to overcome the present ecological crisis and how our way of life must be changed. The human race has become aware that its civilization is continuing to develop rapidly, whereas its spirit is being deteriorated more and more. The crisis of human existence due to ecological destruction affected all the existing fields of study, leading to checking out the directivity of the previous theory and practice and seeking a new paradigm for thinking.
The human race must get out of the fragmentary notion that the ecological crisis resulted from technological civilization designed to satisfy the need of the human race itself. To do so, the human race must admit its greed and selfishness that lies behind, and go further to seek a new way of life for harmony and coexistence as a means of overcoming the greed and selfishness.
Among the means is ecologism. Ecologism is a thought that claims to advocate the idea of equality that all the living things in nature have equal right to exist one another. It is against nature's order of cycle that the human race violates the right to exist of other species, setting up as the lord of creation. Humans have a duty to protect the right to exist of animals and plants, and to preserve nature for mutual coexistence in return for the benefits they get from nature.
A discussion about ecologism is going on actively as the relationship between humans and nature changes from vertical to horizontal one. However, studies on the relationship between ecologism and children's literature are unsatisfactory as they are at an early stage. Seeing that the issues of ecology are a great concern in modern society, they are likely to be discussed in the field of children's literature at a rapid rate. This study aims to find a direction that the present ecological issues and interests in ecologism should take from now on through ecological children's literature. Thus, this study is intended to study ecological elements by selecting the fairy tales of Yi Sang Gwon and Hwang Sun Mi, who is writing ecological fairy tales in depth, as main texts among the fairy tales in 1990s when ecological fairy tales began to receive people's attention in children literature.
Yi Sang Gwon's fairy tales show a directivity toward a life of living together by which humans can get out of human-centered way of thinking and admit beings of nature. Humans should realize that they are also a part of the earth and not different from other living things on earth. The writer's thought that humans cannot live on their own, and humans and other living things live depending on each other is shown here and there in his work.
Hwang Sun Mi enabled children to embrace the value of a life of living together from the heart, not by mind through describing social responsibility toward natural environment and underprivileged people movingly. It can be seen in her fairy tales that living things make up a world by getting closely tangled, and such a life can be sustained and make a progress. Although there are issues of pollution and conflicts in ecological literature, there are also fairy tales that reestablish the relationship between humans and nature, and express a deeper greatness of nature and wonder of life. The distinctive characteristic of her work is that she tells us about the reality of ecology by means of animals' world, and makes us perceive a universal life.
It is the author's wish that, considering ecological elements, this study can help children's literature carry out further tasks. It is important that this study took a first step on the study on ecological elements of Yi Sang Gwon's and Hwang Sun Mi's fairy tales and on other ecological fairy tales in children's literature that will start in earnest from now on, in that this study includes only limited works of some writers.
