The purpose of this study is to understand the cultural significance of tattoos among the MZ generation, as tattoos, once taboo in Korean society, have become an everyday and widespread cultural phenomenon. To achieve this, qualitative interviews were conducted with 35 individuals from the MZ generation (aged 20s to 30s), and their responses were analyzed. According to the results, the meaning of tattoos for participants can be categorized into three themes: “a mark of true self,” “a symbol of bonds and connections,” and “a means of emotional regulation.” Understanding the tattoo culture among the MZ generation, who are expected to lead Korean society in the future, will contribute to expanding academic discussions on their bodies, identities, and cultural practices. Additionally, at policy and industry levels, this research can serve as foundational data for debates on tattoo legalization and for establishing ethical standards that respect cultural diversity.
