헤르만 오벵의 ‘동유럽연구’ = Hermann Aubin’s Ostforschung

Hermann Aubin was one of the most influential professors and the academic organizers in the German historical scholarship from the 1920s to the 1960s. He was a medieval historian, a academic organizer who introduced the local history as a discipline of historiography in the curriculum of the history department, and an Ostforscher who provided the Nazi regime with historical causes for its aggression to the East. Also, even in the early years of the Federal Republic of Germany, he showed the Ostforschung to be established with different responsibilities. His activities and achievements are based on his creed that “Die Wissenschaft kann nicht einfach warten, bis sie gefragt wird, sie muß sich selber zum Worte melden.” His academic careers were related closely with politics and it ensured coordination of the Nazi regime. Yet, in the catastrophic situation after 1945 Aubin demonstrated his power by building the Marburg Herder Institute, in which his firm profession of the ‘Deutsche Ostforschung’ and its scholarly tradition since 1930s was transferred to the Budesrepublik Deutschland. In the case of Aubin, this article provides an insight into the influence of a historian with an unshaken national-conservative patriotism relative to the real politics, the role of a historian as a scholarly organizer for impacting on the real politics and eventually the historical evaluations of his activities.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

오벵은 1920년대부터 1960년대까지 독일 역사학계에서 가장 영향력 있는 교수이자 학술조직가 가운데 한 명이다. 그는 중세사가이자, 지방사를 역사학의 한 분야로서 대학의 교육과정에 도입한 학술조직가이자, 동유럽연구를 통하여 나치의 동유럽 침략에 역사적 명분을 제공한 학자였다. 나아가 전후 독일연방공화국에서도 그는 동유럽연구를 재건하는 역량을 보여주었다. 이러한 활동과 역량은 “학문은 자기를 찾아줄 때까지 기다리는 것이 아니라 스스로 의사를 밝혀야 한다”는 그의 소신에서 비롯한다. 그의 학문적 이력은 정치와 불가분의 관계에 있으며, 이는 나치 체제를 위한 부역으로 드러난다. 그러나 1945년 파국적 상황에 편승하여 마부르크 헤르더 연구소에서 동유럽연구의 전통을 그대로 계승하는 그의 역량은 그야말로 불사조와 다름없는 면모를 보여준다. 오벵의 사례를 통하여 역사가의 신념이 현실 정치에 미치는 영향, 현실 정치를 위한 학자로서 역사가의 역할과 그러한 활동에 대한 후대의 평가를 살펴본다.
