The present research project includes interdisciplinary studies by economists and sociologists about the process and structure of ‘market society’ and ‘market man’ in aspects of economic regime, political society, discourses in public spheres, and systemic environments of life-world.
Our research results are as follows. First, the core of the trap in which the Korean macro-economy is caught lies in the ‘dual structure in production-investment regime.’ The IT industry, the export sector, and some large Chaebol-conglemerates like Samsung are overrepresenting and actually leading the whole Korean economy. Therefore, the middle-strata of the economic structure is considerably weak and, instead, industrial sectors of low income, low added value, and small-scales have been growing. This kind of dual structure in accumulation regime constitutes the material basis of ‘the two nations’ in Korean society.
Secondly, in major areas of economic transactions the influence of financial market in general and, in particular, that of capital market and investment banks, asset management companies, pension funds, mutual funds, etc. are growing fastly. Ordinary citizens are participating not only in bank investment and direct stock investment through security companies, but moreover in indirect stock investment by way of various funds. As regards policy areas, the decisive turn has been made by the ‘Capital Market Integration Act’ for encouraging the growth of large-scale investment banks. Additionally, as those neoliberal financializations coincide with societal aging tendency, the growth of the amount of public and private pensions will encourage a further increase of stock investments.
Thirdly, the complex inequality structure of employment, income, asset, and debt in Korean society makes it clear that the commodification of labor, money, land, and housing proceeds in different ways and contains different life-wordly meanings for different social strata. In principle it is indeed true that ‘fictitious commodities’ like labor, land, and money, and other partly private, partly public goods like housing, are being commodified in a general term. But our study of the Korean case shows that in land market only the upper strata can participate, in housing and financial market the upper and some middle-class strata participate, and the lowest strata can participate exclusively in labor market.
Finally, we corroborated that the developmentalist and materialist discourses have been dominant since the middle 1960s as the government began to drive forward an export-oriented economic development strategy. Since the financial crisis of 1997, major entrepreneurial organizations like the Federation of Korean Industries demanded offensive deregulation on entrepreneurial actions, and such demands have been accepted by Kim Dae-Jung and Roh Moo-Hyun government. In addition, after 1997 the employment situation has been generally exacerbated, and job insecurity and instability have been deepened. Within those social environments, the younger generations are obsessed in promoting individual ‘spec’(specification), whilst more and more peole are commiting suicide caused by pessimism and misanthropy, which might be diagnosed as a fatalism enforced by the ‘market society.’
