국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 대학 안팎의 다양한 위기가 고조되는 상황에서 ‘대학이란 무엇인가’라고 하는 가장 본원적 질문에 대한 성찰이다. 이를 위해 서양 교육사에서 고등교육에 대한 가장 심오한 논쟁으로 평가받는 허친스와 듀이의 논쟁을 살펴볼 것이다. 두 사람의 논쟁은 급격한 사회변화 가운데서 대학의 본질을 수호하면서도 발전시킬 수 있는 사상적 단초를 제공한다. 이 연구에는 1936년 허친스가 출간한 『미국의 고등교육』을 중심으로 그의 고등교육론을 살펴보고, 이에 대한 듀이의 비평과 고등교육론, 그리고 허친스의 재반박을 각각 살펴볼 것이다. 논쟁의 쟁점은 형이상학에 대한 시각차에 기인하며, 형이상학과의 관계에서 허친스는 수직적 연결을 듀이는 수평적 연결을 각각 추구하였다. 이러한 공통점과 차이점은 고등교육이 지향해야 할 ‘형이상적 진리’라는 개념으로 재구성되며, 이를 위해 학계의 기울어진 지형을 바로잡을 수 있는 제도적 뒷받침이 절실히 요구됨을 시사한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study reflects on the fundamental question of “what is a university” in the face of various crises inside and outside the university setting. We consider the debate between Hutchins and Dewey, which is regarded as the most profound debate on higher education in the history of Western education. The debate between the two provides an important insight into how to defend and develop the nature of universities amid rapid social changes. In this study, we first analyze Hutchins’ thoughts on university education, focusing on “The Higher Learning in America,” published in 1936. We then examine Dewey’s criticism of Hutchins’ thoughts and finally, Hutchins’ refutation. This study suggests that the debate was due to the difference in Hutchins’ and Dewey’s perspectives of metaphysics. Specifically, in terms of metaphysics, Hutchins pursued a vertical connection, while Dewey pursued a horizontal connection.
