Ultrasound can be used to manipulate microparticles since the acoustic radiation force of the ultrasound can exert force on the particles. This work concerns a particle separation technique using ultrasound. We propose a novel method to separate mixed two kinds of particles by adjusting the frequency sweep time of the exciting ultrasound. A modulized microchannel having V-shaped branch was manufactured and ultrasound was excited from one side of the channel. The repeating frequency sweep can move the flowing particles to the side of the channel wall. Particles respond only over specific sweep time since they cannot keep pace with the rapidly changing ultrasonic field. So, we can send two kinds of particles into each outlet using their different minimum sweep time. Experiments confirm the successful performance of the proposed method.
