This study aims to propose an English instructional plan that fosters practical communicative competence by analyzing the linkage between a 6th grade elementary English textbook and the film “Flipped”. As authentic audiovisual material, film can enhance learners’ interest, empathy, and contextual understanding, thereby compensating for the limitations of existing textbook-centered instruction, which often emphasizes linguistic forms while lacking authenticity in communicative situations.
For this purpose, the present study analyzed key scenes from Company A’s 6th grade elementary English textbook and the film “Flipped” in terms of communicative functions, linguistic forms, vocabulary, and cultural elements. The textbook analysis revealed that although the twelve units present a variety of linguistic forms, opportunities for authentic communication and natural expressions are limited. In addition, the cultural components tend to provide fragmentary information rather than promoting in-depth cultural understanding or learner empathy.
Based on the analysis, an instructional plan utilizing selected scenes from the film was developed. First, five major scenes from the film were selected, and linguistic forms and vocabulary corresponding to the 6th grade curriculum were extracted. Second, textbook expressions were reconstructed and expanded within authentic communicative contexts so that learners could acquire more natural and practical communication skills. Third, by employing the characteristics of audiovisual media, such as visual and auditory cues, the instructional plan encouraged active learner participation through activities involving listening, prediction, and inference without subtitles. Furthermore, the film provided learners with opportunities to gain a multidimensional understanding of American school life and invitation culture.
This study is meaningful in that it proposes a practical instructional plan that supplements the limitations of classroom-based textbook instruction and strengthens learners’ communicative competence through authentic materials. However, as the instructional plan was not implemented in an actual classroom setting, the study is limited in its ability to verify educational effectiveness empirically. Therefore, further research involving classroom application and empirical analysis is required.
