In the context of economic globalization, the production and operation of enterprises are no longer confined to a single country. Multinational enterprises have become one of the important engines of world economic development. The construction and contribution of multinational enterprises in host countries promote the local economic growth. At the same time, they also cause problems such as environmental pollution. Enterprises usually do not spontaneously pay attention to social performance. To reduce the cost of fulfilling social responsibility, multinational enterprises may choose to invest in countries or regions with lower social responsibility standards. However, as the investors and general public pay more attention to social and environmental issues, the multinational corporate managers are increasingly focusing not only on economic responsibility, but also on ethical and social responsibility, and on improving the social performance that results from the fulfillment of these responsibilities. Based on this, this study focuses on exploring the driving factors of social performance of multinational enterprises from the perspectives of stakeholders, strategic asset seeking, and green innovation, providing reference and guidance for corporate decision makers. Specifically, this study draws on stakeholder theory and resource-based theory to construct a research model, taking primary stakeholder pressure, secondary stakeholder pressure, and strategic asset-seeking intention as independent variables, and green process innovation and green product innovation as mediator variables, to construct a theoretical model with corporate social performance as the dependent variable. This study distributed questionnaires to multinational enterprises with actual multinational business behaviors, experience in green innovation practices and whose parent companies are located in China. A total of 279 valid questionnaires were collected. Then, the data analysis and hypothesis testing of 17 hypotheses were conducted in this study by using structural equation modeling methodology. This study mainly draws the following conclusions: primary stakeholder pressure has a significant positive impact on both green process innovation and green product innovation; secondary stakeholder pressure has a significant positive impact on both green process innovation and green product innovation; strategy asset-seeking intention has a significant positive impact on both green process innovation and green product innovation; green process innovation and green product innovation both have a significant positive impact on corporate social performance; primary stakeholder pressure and strategic asset-seeking intention have a significant positive impact on corporate social performance; green process innovation and green product innovation have a mediating role in the impact of primary stakeholder pressure, secondary stakeholder pressure and strategic asset- seeking intentions on corporate social performance. This study not only enriches the relevant researches on the factors influencing the social performance of multinational enterprises but also expands the application scope of stakeholder theory and resource-based theory, offering new theoretical perspectives for the study of corporate social performance. Additionally, it provides valuable theoretical guidance and practical references for corporate managers aiming to improve social performance.
