아리스토텔레스는 명제론에서 “Homer is a poet”으로부터 “Homer is”가 추론될 수 없다고 주장하고, 범주론에서는 “Socrates is sick”으로부터 “Socrates is”가 추론될 수 있다고 이야기한다.

This research explicates the historical origin of the Western ontology through the analysis of the Greek verb einai. I first examine and compare the Greek word ‘einai’, the English words ‘be’ and ‘exist’, and the Korean ‘itta’. Considering various factors, it is likely that the Greek word ‘einai’ has a unified meaning of non-categorical existence. And this observation resolves many problems involving alleged ambiguities of einai in Greek philosophy.
In Republic V Plato infers that many “beautifuls” are and are not, from the fact that many beautifuls look sometimes beautiful and sometimes ugly. This inference is justified only when einai expresses a non-categorical conception of existence. This is strong evidence that for Plato einai is a non-categorical concept of existence.
Aristotle claims in De Interpretatione that “Homer is” does not follow from “Homer is a poet”, but in the Categories he argues that “Socrates is” follows from “Socrates is sick”. These two passages seem incompatible, but we can see that they are compatible if we understand einai in both passages as expressing a kind of non-categorical existence. This strongly suggests that for Aristotle too einai is a non-categorical concept of existence.
If ‘einai’ expresses a non-categorical concept of existence for Plato
