Authors analyzed factors influencing the development of peritumoral brain edema in a series of 40 patients with intracranial meningiomas. We used the Edema Index(EI) which was calculated by dividing the size of the meningiomas and peritumoral edema by the size of the meningiomas using the CT scan and MRI. We compared the El with several factors which might influence the amount of peritumoral brain edema. 31 cases among the 40 cases revealed peritumoral edema.
The factors which revealed significantly more severe peritumoral edema were meningiomas which were located in falx and frontal convexity, those without radiologic calcifications, meningiomas in solid natures, those which with less homogenous enhancement in the brain CT scan or MRI, and right hemispheric meningiomas.
