The purpose of this study was to propose an alternative assessment way of facilitating students` critical thinking, considering critical thinking assessment as the inquiry process that collects and judges information with related to students` critical thinking in order to improve their critical thinking ability. Critical thinking ability consisted of critical thinking skills including the processes of reflecting upon a tangible or intangible item in order to form a solid judgment and thinking disposition that is the willingness to critically participate in such a critical thinking process. In the context of traditional assessment of critical thinking ability, critical thinking ability have been divided into critical thinking skills indicating the cognitive aspect of thinking and critical thinking disposition indicating the affective aspect of thinking, then each of them were reductively assessed. But this standardized multiple tests have not reflected students` real life in and out of school as well as have exerted a bad effect upon their teaching and learning processes in their classrooms. In order to overcome the limit of the traditional critical thinking assessment, therefore, the investigator views critical thinking assessment as the inquiry process that collects and judges information with related to students` critical thinking in order to improve their critical thinking ability and proposes portfolio assessment as a way of embodying it. Portfolio assessment as an inquiry process to facilitate the development of students` critical thinking may become a bowl that is able to maintain the proper balance in the context of critical thinking assessment.
