전통시대 유교문명권의 책봉 · 조공제도 부정론에 대한 재검토

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper attempts to reexamine critical views on the investiture and tribute system that is the most essential system in the international relations of the pre-modern Confucian world. It is being argued that the investiture and tribute system cannot be an appropriate master-code to comprehend the pre-modern East Asian international relations. Some even totally deny its value. First of all, in order to fully understand the international relations in Confucian world order, it is necessary to approach comparatively in terms of civilization zones and historical contexts, overcoming Eurocentrism and ahistoricism as well. A full-fledged understanding of Confucianism and the idea of Li(rituals) is needed as a prerequisite requirement. The investiture was a universal ritual in the medieval era in which kings were installed by Son of Heaven for royal legitimacy and official recognition. In Confucian world order, the investiture and tribute processes were carried out in accordance with rituals and rules to show clearly the hierarchical relations between Emperor and kings. After settling security crisis out of unorthodox non-Chinese dynasty rising, the investiture and tribute system was always restored. This indicates that the system is based strongly on Confucianism. Lastly, the criticism and negation of the investiture and tribute system on the basis of its inefficacy and malfunction in the nations outside Confucian world is invalid, for the standard of civilizations is valid only inside its zone, not outside it. In short, the indication of the limitations inherent in the investiture and tribute system is convincing, but the overall denial of the system is inconvincible.
