This paper provides viewer(audience) with Production and Virtual environments utilizing technology in the field of interactive art and explored interactive Media Art that offers extreme Virtual Reality. Rather than a mere mechanical artwork using computer, this paper deals with interactivity in traditional visual art such as painting, photo, and moving images like movie and video art, analyzing types of Interactive Media Art that takes advantages of technology. Also, it takes account of changes occurred in the interactivity between artwork and viewer due to utilizing technology in aesthetic viewpoint.
People recognize interactivity in the relationship between viewer and artwork in today’s contemporary art and its importance is being hugely highlighted. In this regard, this paper explores the field of Interactive Media Art in depth that has been overlooked.
Computer technologies intersect areas between images that enchant eyes of viewer and thus recreate a new domain of art. Among others, it aims to analyze and examine artworks created as a result of sensor work and special effect given to input information, after computer input recognizing move of viewer with PC camera. Therefore one topic called ‘Types of Interactive Media Art’ analyzed in concrete artworks using pc camera.
Interactive Art that induces participation such as dadaist and minimalist to the work gives a bigger share to viewer and it was successful in making audience concentrate in participation to work. Machine aesthetics arisen after painting-focused era, i.e. video art stemming from film art is fallen under one type and the art created after distribution of computer is come under the other type. And this paper analyzes the latter among two that is artwork utilizing pc camera and adding new meaning by adopting images of viewer to the screen. On analysis, it attempts aesthetic approach and exhaustive discussion on Virtual Reality appeared in artwork and manufacturing technology of Interactive Media Art, at the same time exploring interaction between viewer and artwork. In aesthetic approach, relevance from ancient philosopher Plato to modern philosophy will be focused and subjectivity of viewer that has mirror effect in interactive media art will be discussed. This paper will analyze subjectivity of audience in ‘Mirror stage’ of Lacan and in ‘Theory of Visual Arts’ for further study.
Approach of Lacan is adopted by various theories in paintings and film arts. And what this paper tries to discuss is how subjectivity of viewer is applied in the Interactive Media Art. Works fell under type of topic of paper are discussed in Chapter 3 and in Chapter 4, it carries out breakdown analysis. At first, manufacturing technology is examined and secondly, Interactivity is explored by providing environment for implementation, i.e. Virtual Reality to audience and thirdly, its impact on contemporary arts is reviewed in aesthetic viewpoint.
In conclusion, it deals with impact on contemporary artists in terms of artistic expression done by appearance of new media and technology advancement.
