The cement industry is a major contributor to global CO2 emissions, accounting for approximately 8% of anthropogenic greenhouse gases. To address this challenge, wollastonite-based composites (WBCCs) have been investigated as promising candidates for the development of novel CO2 sequestration binders. Wollastonite (CS) is a non-hydraulic calcium silicate that reacts directly with CO2 to form stable carbonates, enabling mineral carbonation while reducing the CO2 footprint associated with conventional Portland cement.
In this study, wollastonite polymorphs were successfully synthesized through a solid-state process using a mineralizer. Calcination at 1050 °C produced wollastonite-1A(β-CS), while calcination at 1250 °C yielded pseudowollastonite(α-CS) with a total content of 93.8%. These synthesized polymorphs were subsequently employed to produce WBCCs and to investigate their carbonation behavior, microstructural evolution, and mechanical performance through three consecutive studies.
First, WBCCs incorporating up to 30 wt.% CS underwent in-situ CO2 mixing process, achieved direct mineral carbonation while maintaining high compressive strength exceeding 40 MPa. β-CS exhibited a greater CO2 sequestration capacity due to the formation of amorphous CaCO3 and Ca-depleted silicate layers, whereas α-CS contributed more significantly to strength development through delayed ettringite and monocarboaluminate formation.
Second, the temperature-dependent carbonation of α-CS was systematically investigated under controlled curing conditions. A minimum curing temperature of 50 °C was required for effective strength development, while curing at 60 °C produced the highest compressive strength (24.33 MPa) and CO2 sequestration capacity (14.01%). Carbonation proceeded in two distinct phases: an initial rapid stage dominated by surface reactions and a slower diffusion-controlled stage. Calcite was the dominant product, accompanied by transient vaterite, aragonite, and amorphous CaCO3, each forming at different carbonation stages.
Finally, the incorporation of amino acids, particularly 0.5 wt.% L-aspartic acid, was found to significantly enhance early compressive strength and modify the carbonation pathway of α-CS pastes. Amino acid addition promoted internal carbonation, stabilized amorphous CaCO3, and facilitated its recrystallization into calcite, resulting in improved microstructural densification and reduced crack thickness. Despite a slight reduction in total CO2 uptake, amino acid incorporation improved the mechanical performance and durability of carbonated α-CS binders through the formation of hybrid organic–inorganic microstructures.
This dissertation presents a comprehensive study on the synthesis, carbonation, and modification of wollastonite-based composites derived from α- and β-polymorphs. The findings demonstrate that (i) wollastonite polymorphs can be effectively synthesized through a solid-state route, (ii) in-situ CO2 mixing enables direct mineral carbonation in WBCCs while maintaining high mechanical strength, (iii) α-CS exhibits optimal carbonation reactivity between 50 and 60 °C, and (iv) amino acid incorporation enhances both the mechanical performance and microstructural densification of carbonated α-CS. Collectively, these results establish wollastonite-based composites as a novel class of sustainable CO2 sequestration binders, bridging the gap between fundamental carbonation mechanisms and practical applications for low-carbon construction materials.
