All history books and theoretical books on Chinese/Korean traditional music have a unique mathematical logic that spreads out 1-3-9-81. This paper pays attention to the philosophical background of the mathematical logic that spreads out 1-3-9-81. The unique mathematical logic is applied to calculating oŭm 五音 (wu-yin or 5-yin in Chinese) and sibiyul 十二律 (shih-êrh-lü or 12-lüs).
In general, T'aegŭk 太極 (T'ai-chi in Chinese) means Ŭmyang T'aegŭk 陰陽太極 (Yin-yang T'ai-chi) that spreads out 1 (T'aegŭk, T'ai-chi) - 2 (Ŭmyang, Ŭmyang) - 4 (Sasang 四象, Szŭ-hsiang in Chinese) - 8 (P'algwae 八卦, Pa-kua). As you seen above, Ŭmyang T'aegǔk branches into 2 (Ŭmyang) that means the cosmic dual forces. But Sam T'aegŭk 三太極 (San T'a-chi) or Samwŏn T'aegŭk 三元太極 (San-yüan T'a-chi) branches into 3, i.e. Ch'ŏn 天 (T'ien), Chi 地 (Ti), and In 人 (Jên). These 3 (T'ien, Ti and Jên) are called Samjae 三才 (San-ts'ai) that means the cosmic triple forces. The philosophy that based on Sam T'aegŭk is called ‘3.1 philosophy.’ The symbol of ‘3.1 philosophy’ is Sam T'aegŭk that means the source of the triple principle of T'ien, Ti and Jên.
In this paper, the author suggests that the philosophical background that calculates 5-yin and 12-lüs is based on ‘3.1 philosophy’ and the logic of Sam T'aegǔk. Moreover the author suggests that ‘3.1 philosophy’ has its origin in north-eastern Shamanism.
