The history of province has been mostly recognized as a subcategory of Korean history in theacademic field. The history of province, however, has been recently coming up to one of theimportant parts that would be able to enhance the quality and confirm the basis of Koreanhistory. The study on Seoul East-North province is one of the important parts too.
Seoul East-North province was originally belonged to Yang-Ju province. People from Bakje whoruled Seoul East-North province for the first time, called it Habuk-Wiryesung. After invasionsfrom Kogurye, the dominance of this place was turned over to Kogurye. People from Koguryecalled this place Mae-Cho-Sung, Mae-Sung-Gun, or Chang-Hwa-Gun, and people from Silla wholater ruled there, called Nam-Pyong-Yang-Sung, or Pyong-Yang-Sung of Buk-Han-San-Gun. Afterthat, the place was marked under the name of Yang-Ju during Korye era, and till ChosonDynasty and modern era, Seoul East-North province was liberated with remaining the historicityand cultural features of Yang-Ju as it was. Although some parts of Yang-Ju province used to beincluded in Sungjeosimni province due to the special circumstance that it was very adjacent toSeoul, it was the place mostly belonged to Yang-Ju province, and lived an ordinary life underthe rule of Master of Yang-Ju-Mok during Choson Dynasty and Master of Yang-Ju-Gun afterKo-Jong period. (A diversity of situations which took place because it was the borderlandbetween Yang-Ju province and Hang-Sung-Bu, seems another part needed further research.)However, after the mid-1960s, the period of rapid industrialization, people aimlessly went up toSeoul and this caused the population concentration in the Seoul area, Seoul East-North province, once belonged to Yang-Ju province, cannot help incorporating into the contemporary SeoulMetropolis. Although the names of Seoul East-North province which was newly incorporated, changed Sung-Buk-Gu, Dobong-Gu, and Nowon-Gu, the origin of them can be found from theperiod when Seoul East-North province was belonged to Yang-Ju province. In other words, itseems there must be closed relationship between the names of Seoul East-North provinceincluding villages and Yang-Ju province especially in terms of cultural identification andhistoricity. The remaining names of these villages prove these facts very well. Thus, thehistorical characteristic of Seoul East-North province is an inseparable relation with Yang-Juprovince. For these reasons, comprehensive, expansive, and methodical research has to bepreceded under the relationship with Yang-Ju province for more intensive research on SeoulEast-North province.
