      The purpose of this study is to find alternative keyboard size for small-handed pianists. It has been started with several questions. First, how many piano players, including young students have small hands? Second, do the small-handed pianists need reduced size keyboards? Third, will the alternative sized piano help people to solve the problems which caused by unsuitable keyboard size?
      First of all, in order to find ways to solve these problems, we researched the history of keyboard span. In the research, one interesting fact is that in 1784 to 1825 there were various sized keyboards. This means composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Schumann would have composed many of their masterpieces on keyboards that were smaller than our present day conventional size.
      On top of that, we researched hand span data and its relationship with keyboard size. After other researchers hand span data, we have measured and researched various peoples hand span and categorized it with sexuality and age. The results show that the smaller-handed pianists need the smaller keyboards. In other words, the smaller size keyboards would resolve problems which come from wide keyboard span.
      In terms of the quality of piano performance, many small-handed pianists are struggling with technical problems, injury, and restrained repertoire. Especially when it comes to playing large block chords or fast octave passages, there is no choice but roll the chords, slow down the tempo, or change the repertoire. In order to resolve these problems, we studied reduced size keyboard and its prospective outcome with researchers works.
