Acidic beverage consumption is widely associated with enamel erosion, and delaying toothbrushing for 30–60 minutes afterward has been commonly recommended. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of short term remineralization on enamel resistance to abrasion following acidic challenge. Bovine enamel specimens (n = 84) were allocated to seven groups (G0–G6) under simulated intraoral conditions. Except for the sound enamel control group (G0), all specimens were subjected to acid erosion using a pH-cycling protocol. Toothbrushing abrasion tests were subsequently performed according to remineralization time (0, 15, 30, or 60 min) and the presence or absence of silica abrasives. Enamel surface morphology was examined by scanning electron micros copy (SEM). In contrast, surface roughness, cross-sectional area loss, and microhardness were quantified using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and a Vickers hardness tester. SEM analysis revealed partial recov ery of enamel rod structures with increasing remineralization time. However, CLSM and hardness testing demon strated no significant improvement in abrasion resistance or hardness among remineralized groups compared with non-remineralized specimens. Furthermore, comparison with the sound enamel group indicated that the det- rimental effects of acid erosion predominated over the limited benefits of remineralization within 60 minutes.
These results suggest that short-term remineralization is insufficient to restore the mechanical properties of enamel after acidic exposure. Therefore, reducing the consumption of acidic beverages may be a more effective strategy for enamel preservation than relying on delayed toothbrushing.
