The purpose of this study was to examine the type of kitchens in urban houses and identify the relationship between the residents' characteristics. For this study, review of literature and content analysis methods were used. One hundred and forty six magazines were selected from the seven different monthly magazines between 1990 and 1994. The frequency, percentage, chi-square, and discriminant analysis were used for a content analysis.
The major findings were as follows: 1) The types of kitchens were classified into six categories: unit kitchen, system kitchen, built-in system kitchen, small kitchen, family kitchen, and idiosyncratic kitchen. 2) There were significant differences in the type of kitchen among household, housing, and kitchen characteristics. And 3) The effective factors on the kitchen types were age and occupation of homemakers, size of family, family life span, pattern of house, size of house, arrangement of work centers and kitchen cabinets.
