Purpose and Method In this theses I have analyzed the attitude toward death and all sorts of influential factors, and investigated their preparation for death and their belief in the future life. As an object I have taken the aged who is faced with death. The purpose of this study lies in revaluating the life in old age, in contribution to lead a meaningful old age life, to plan comfortable old age, and to improve the quality of old age. To achieve these purposes, I have raised some concrete questions as follows: First, is the aged attitude toward death positive or negative? Secondly which is the most important factor influencing this attitude among the psychological, physical, and family environmental factors? Thirdly, I have analyzed the individual differences in their preparation for death and their belief in the future life according to the independent variables. As the data, I have used questionaire based on theoretical discussion with a sample of 300 old men living in Seoul. I have interviewed with them personally with the questionaire from September seventh to September twenty-fifth in 1984. MAJOR FINDINGS The results of this study are as follows: First, the aged attitude toward death in our country tends to be negative rather than acceptable. Secondly, there are some noticeable facts in the aged attitude toward death. 1. The attitude of the old man (49.7%) is negative, while that of the old woman (50.3%) is positive. 2. As becoming older, they show negative attitude toward death. This fact suggests that the more they are old, the more they attach to life. 3. The religious the aged has positive attitude toward death, while irreligious the aged has rather negative attitude. This fact suggests that the religion in old age has close relation with the attitude toward death. 4. The upper class the aged has negative attitude toward death, while the lower class the aged has positive attitude. 5. The aged living with his family and children has negative attitude toward death, while the aged living alone or who doesn` t have regular residence or lives in old folk`s home has positive attitude. Thirdly, the results of analysing the influential factors on the aged attitude toward death are as follows: 1. In the case of the old man, the physical factor has a great influence on the attitude toward death, while in old woman the family, environmental factor has a great influence on the attitude. 2. The aged from 60 to 69 years old has psychological factors, from 70 to 89 years old has family environmental factors, above 90 has pyhsical factors respectively as influential factor on attitude toward death. 3. The upper class the aged has psychological factors, the middle class the aged has family environmental factors, the lower class the aged has physical factors respectively as the most influential factor an attitude toward death. Fourthly, the preparation for death and belief in future life are as follows: 1. The aged in our country tend to be rather unprepared for death. 2. The upper class the aged wants to be reborn as a man, while the lower class the aged as a bird. This fact reflects the psychological conflict from life form. 3. The religious the aged regards the future life as heaven and hell. while the irreligious the aged doesn`t have belief in future life or regards the future life as a mysterious one.
