This study examined how the perception and interpretation of ancient Chinese astronomical anomalies were adopted and adapted in Joseon by comparing “Gaewonjeomgyeong” and “Cheondongsangwigo”. Despite the long historical gap, significant similarities are observed in the perception of astronomical anomalies and the interpretation of divination. This suggests that the content of Chinese astrology books was actively utilized during the compilation of astronomical texts in the Joseon Dynasty, demonstrating that the interpretation of astronomical anomalies was recognized as an important governing principle and a form of national astrology. However, several differences are evident; first, there is a difference in the perception of the severity of the same astronomical anomalies. While both texts viewed solar anomalies, such as solar eclipses, as national crises, “Gaewonjeomgyeong” perceived lunar eclipses as a threat to the monarch, whereas “Cheondongsangwigo” limited its interpretation to merely predicting natural disasters or the hardship of the people. Next, differences are also observed in the interpretation of divinations. While “Gaewonjeomgyeong” focused on national crises and the safety of the monarch, “Cheondongsangwigo” extensively added content related to the practical lives of the people, such as drought, floods, famine, epidemics, and food shortages. This demonstrates that in Joseon, the observation of astronomical phenomena came to emphasize practical purposes, such as climate prediction and the stability of the people's livelihoods. In conclusion, although knowledge of astronomical anomalies from ancient China exerted a profound influence up to the Joseon Dynasty, it can be confirmed that selective variations occurred in the severity of each anomaly and the interpretation of divinations according to Joseon's social needs and interests.
