The present study purposed to examine the changes of Chinese grammar through history from the period of syllabus under the U.S. military administration to the period of the 7th National Curriculum based on the commentaries of the secondary classical Chinese curriculum. The contents of this thesis are composed as follows. Chapter I presented motives for writing this thesis and Chapter II reviewed the changes of Chinese grammar education observed in the commentaries of the secondary classical Chinese curriculum. Chapter III compared the contents of secondary Chinese grammar education observed in the commentary of each curricular period and Chapter IV summarized discussions above and drew conclusions. In addition, suggestions were made for the desirable direction of Chinese grammar education. Key contents compared, analyzed and discussed in this study were the changes of Chinese grammar and the characters, objectives, teaching contents, teaching methods and assessment items of the secondary classical Chinese curriculum in each period based on the commentaries of the secondary classical Chinese curriculum during the periods of the 5th~7th National Curriculums because such commentaries began to be published from the 5th National Curriculum. The contents of Chinese grammar appearing in the commentaries were mostly presented in ``teaching contents``, ``teaching methods`` and ``assessment.`` In the commentary of the secondary classical Chinese curriculum during the period of the 5th National Curriculum, teaching and learning items related to grammar are presented in detail in the area of ``contents,`` and in the commentaries during the 6th and 7th National Curriculums details on grammar are described in ``teaching methods, ``assessment,`` etc. In the classical Chinese curriculum, grammar occupies an important part of teaching·learning contents and methods. Accordingly, in order to edit the commentary of the classical Chinese curriculum in a more desirable way, contents related to Chinese grammar should be presented minutely in the areas of ``characters,`` ``objectives,`` ``contents,`` ``methods`` and ``assessment`` as in the commentary of the classical Chinese curriculum in the 5th National Curriculum. In particular, it should be stated clearly in ``teaching items and cautions`` that explanations on the use of ``grammatical terms`` should use terms based on ``a draft of unified Chinese grammar`` established by an association or organization related to classical Chinese education. We wish that the contents for desirable Chinese grammar education discussed above may be reflected in the classical Chinese curriculum of the 8th National Curriculum.
