It has been reported that biophysical profile scoring system is more valuable than any other basic methods in the early diagnosis of fetal acidosis in the antenatal care. We attempted to correlate fetal acidosis to biophysical profile scoring system, to fetal breathing movement with nonstress test and to Apgar score. This study was based on 108 cases of the pregnant women not administered analgesics and sedatives. Biophysical profile scoring were obtained by B-mode real time ultrasonography and nonstress from Manning`s criteria. The following results were obtained. 1. The mean value of umbilical arterial pH±1SD in 5 minute Apgar score above 7 was 7.43±0.06. 2. The mean value of umbilical arterial pH±1SD in 5 minute Apgar score below 7 was 7.10±0.05. 3. The mean value of umbilical arterial pH±1SD in biophysical profile score above 7 was 7.46±0.07 and below 7 was 7.18±0.05. 4. The sensitivity and specificity of 5 minute Apgar score to predict fetal acidosis was 83.3%,94.8% and biophysical profile score 91.7%,93.8%. In case of N.S.T. and fetal breathing movement were 91.7%,85.4% respectively. This results suggest that N.S.T with fetal brething movement absent has a good correlation with fetal acidosis as predicted by biophysical profile score.
