This study examines two novels by Kenzaburō Ōe to analyze representations of Japan's defeat and the experience of occupation as experienced by the shōkokumin generation. It also explores how representations of the occupier in Ōe's literature became increasingly multilayered in response to historical change, as well as the implications of this transformation. In his early career, Ōe depicted Japanese youths who projected themselves onto the image of a “tethered dog.” In The Okuretekita Seinen, however, he presents a different type of young man: a youth from the periphery struggling for social advancement. The Americanism and modernization that permeate metropolitan Tokyo are represented in the novel as ambivalent objects of both emulation and transcendence. Ōe portrays the protagonist’s entangled psychology and struggle as “another war” waged by a generation that had lived through wartime as shōkokumin but had been too young to participate in the war. Utsukushii Anaberu Rī portrays the occupier as an ambivalent figure embodying both protection and violence. Although the novel is set against the backdrop of the CIE Library, which represented American soft power during the Occupation, it paradoxically evokes the former occupier’s enduring hard power in the form of U.S. military bases, which remain firmly entrenched to this day.
