UP to the present time, the traditional assessment of the secondary school has been for the placement or selection of the students. Consequently, the assessment has been useful in determining relative order but has not contributed to improving educational growth of each student. Since the Sixth National English Curriculum Revision, the primary purpose of English has been focused on developing communicative competence. One of the most appropriate assessments under the communicative purpose is the performance assessment. With the previous multiple choice test, we cannot evaluate the communicative competence satisfactorily.
Under the communicative competence-based education, the principles of assessment are as follows : i) the assessment should be done in real communicative situations, ii) the assessment must be enforced in various ways, using real objects, pictures, charts, etc, iii) the assessment should be carried out consistently, not at a time. And the typical types of activities used for performance assessment in 4 language skills are : i) oral interview, role play, information-gap activity, picture-cued description, etc, (Speaking), ii) T. P. R., short question-answer, dictation, listen & draw a picture, etc. (Hearing), iii) descriptive diagnostic test, cloze test, reading strategy checklist, etc. (Reading), iv) Filling out the forms, editing, controlled writing, port folio, writing essay, etc. (Writing) , In order to set actual performance assessment questions, assessment standards and concrete guidelines should be given. With reward to the assessment standards, we can adopt either integrative evaluation standards or analytic evaluation standards.
