황순원의 <신(神)들의 주사위>에 나타난 양자론적 세계관

This paper explores the quantum worldview visible in Hwang Sun-Won`s The Dice of Gods. Hwang adapted the novel`s title from Albert Einstein`s famous remark on quantum theory: “God does not play dice.” This creative reworking of Einstein`s words can be taken as proof of Hwang`s acknowledgement of the quantum worldview. By changing “God,” the keyword in Einstein`s quote, into the plural “gods,” and by equating “gods” with “humans,” Hwang acknowledged quantum theory, or the physics of the extremely small. Even if we were to assume that Hwang did not consider quantum theory while writing the novel, it still displays strong indications of a quantum worldview whose most distinctive features are indeterminacy and discontinuity. Therefore, invoking a quantum view, imbued with interdisciplinary consilience, to clarify the novel`s theme, can be an appropriate research methodology. By introducing an indeterministic and discontinuous worldview in his work, Hwang intended to explore the themes of fate and the choice of free will through the conflicts faced by a family community in the backdrop of a small farming town. The novel displays an indeterministic attitude of valuing the process more than the result through the protagonist Choi Han-su and the young intellectuals. The wavelike characteristics of the constructive and destructive interferences that appear in the microscopic world give rise to a reciprocal interference that affects the characters` inner consciousness and actions. In addition, the novel displays a discontinuous awareness of the world, emphasizing that we should not jump to conclusions or judgements about aspects of the microscopic world based on the causal logic of the macroscopic world. What may be seen as deviation or loss in the macroscopic world could very well be seen as a process of reflection and recovery in the discontinuous microscopic world. This perspective leaves room for interpreting the tragic downfall of the Choi Doo-shik family, with the choices the brothers Han-su and Han-young make through free will, in a positive light.
