This paper examines the life of Armand Carrel (1800–1836), editor of Le National, a leading advocate of dynastic change during the July Revolution of 1830. His life helps us understand what the Bourbon Restoration and the resistance against it meant to those who devoted their youth to the struggle for the overthrow of the Bourbon dynasty. For Carrel, the Restoration was above all associated with memories of foreign occupation, the collapse of the Empire, and the humiliating submission to the Holy Alliance. By contrast, the memories of the French Revolution and the Empire were, for him, memories of a “war for liberty.” This memories led him to take part in military-elite–led Carbonari conspiracies that did not rely on spontaneous popular mobilization, and to join a liberal foreign legion formed to support the Spanish constitutionalists’ military pronunciamiento. The failure of these experiences ultimately culminated in a theory of dynastic change that was neither a revolution nor a coup d’état, involving neither popular insurrection nor secret conspiracies. Rooted in the memory of the Revolution and the Empire, in his hatred of the Restoration and his anger toward the Holy Alliance, Carrel's militant patriotism and his dream of a “war for liberty” would later be revived, alongside his disillusionment with the foreign policy of the July Monarchy.
