조선박람회의 문학적 재현 = 염상섭 『광분(狂奔)』의 세계

국문 초록 (Abstract)

염상섭이 조선박람회를 참관한 후 곧이어 『조선일보』에 연재한 장편소설 『광분』은 식민지 조선의 축소판인 박람회를 다시 민병천의 집으로 형상화하면서 조선박람회를 문학적으로 재현하고 있다.
염상섭이 『광분』에서 관심을 두고 있는 것은 박람회의 스펙터클 자체보다는 조선박람회를 둘러싼 인물들의 욕망이다. 염상섭은 『광분』의 공간을 조선박람회를 축약한 민병천의 가옥으로 설정하여 무력하고 혼란한 경성의 현실을 재현한다. 또한 서로 다른 시기에 일어난 경성 학생운동과 박람회를 동시간의 사건으로 재구성하면서 보도통제의 현실을 은유하고 경성의 ‘군중’을 ‘민중’으로 재현하기도 한다. 그리고 박람회를 둘러싼 사건의 배경이 되는 등장인물들의 욕망을 촘촘히 묘사하여 사회의 동력이 개인의 욕망에 있음을 강조한다.
『광분』은 이와 같이1929년 경복궁에서 열린‘시정20주년기념 조선박람회’를 형상화하면서, 박람회의 규모와 전시물에 압도되거나 축제를 즐기는 대신 ‘박람회’가 ‘식민조선’을 디스플레이하는 방식과 조선인들이 ‘박람회’라는 사건을 수용하는 방식을 살펴본다. 『광분』에서 박람회는 산업기술이 아니라 마치 경성인들의 욕망을 전시한 장과 같이 그려진다. 그들은 박람회의 스펙터클에 압도된 구경꾼이 되지 않고 개인의 욕망을 충족하기 위해 오히려 박람회를 이용한다. 이와 같이 ?광분?은 개최세력이 의도한 ‘미디어’로서의 조선박람회가 가진 균열지점까지 재현해 내고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

After visiting Chosun Expo, Yeom Sang-seop soon reproduced it as literature by embodying Chosun Expo that was a small version of colonized Chosun into Min Byeong-cheon’s house in his full-length novel, 『Gwangbun』, published serially in 『Chosun Ilbo』.
What Yeom Sang-seop focuses in 『Gwangbun』 is not the spectacles of Chosun Expo itself but the desire of characters concerned in that Chosun Expo. Yeom Sang-seop sets up the spatial background of 『Gwangbun』 as Min Byeong-cheon’s house which is a small version of Chosun Expo in order to reproduce the reality of Gyeongseong that is helpless and confusing. And he restructures the Gyeongseong Student Movement and Chosun Expo that happened in different periods as events that happened simultaneously so as to metaphorize the reality of the controlled news report and reproduce the ‘crowd’ in Gyeongseong as ‘people’. Also, he depicts the desire of characters which forms the background of the events happening around Chosun Expo in detail to highlight the fact that the drive in society is each individual’s desire.
As shown above, this study examines how 『Gwangbun』 embodies ‘Chosun Expo celebrating the 20th anniversary of Gyeongseong’ held in Gyeongbok Palace in 1929 and investigates how ‘Chosun Expo’ displays ‘colonized Chosun’ and how people in Chosun accept the event of ‘Chosun Expo’ instead of being overwhelmed by the scale or spectacles of the exhibition or enjoying the festival.
In 『Gwangbun』, Chosun Expo is described as some kind of field that displays the desire of the people in Gyeongseong, not as industrial technology. They employ the exhibition instead of satisfying their own desire not becoming a spectator overwhelmed by the spectacles of it. Therefore, 『Gwangbun』 reproduces even the point of a crevice that Chosun Expo shows as the ‘media’ intended by the authority of holding the event.
