국문 초록 (Abstract)

『와인즈버그, 오하이오』(Winesburg, Ohio 1919)에서 셔우드 앤더슨(Sherwood Anderson)의 그로테스크들은 내면에 강한 열정을 갖고 있으며, 자신들의 생각과 감정을 외부로 표현하기 위해 필사적으로 타인과 의미있는 접촉을 시도한다. 그러나 그들의 말이나 신체적 접촉과 같은 표현 방식은 종종 오해를 불러일으키고 타인의 이해와 공감을 얻는데 실패한다. 특히 첫 번째 단편인「손」(“Hands”)에서 앤더슨은 윙 비들범(Wing Biddlebaum)의 내적 감정과 외적 표현의 문제를 다루는데, 불안하게 움직이는 손의 이미지는 그의 기괴한 신체적인 특징을 보여줄 뿐만 아니라 내적인 고통을 표현하는 중요한 상징이다.
펜실베니아에서 선생님이었던 윙은 자신의 창조적인 열정을 표현하고 학생들에게 꿈을 심어주기 위해 손으로 그들의 어깨를 어루만지거나 헝클어진 머리를 쓰다듬는다. 그러나 비언어적 소통의 수단인 손을 통한 그의 표현 방식은 성적인 오해를 불러일으키고 심지어 마을에서 추방되는 결과를 초래한다. 와인즈버그에 정착한 후윙은 사람들 앞에서 항상 손을 숨기려고 애쓰는 등 손에 대해 강박관념과 신체적 접촉에 대한 두려움을 느끼는 그로테스크로 살아간다.
따라서 윙의 이야기는 자신의 내적 감정과 열정, 그리고 창조성을 표현하지 못하고 또 그것을 타인에게 전달하지도 못한 그로테스크의 과거의 경험이 현재까지도 개인의 삶에 어두운 영향을 끼치는 와인즈버그의 현실을 보여준다. 앤더슨은 윙의 이야기를 통해 내적 감정을 적절한 언어로 표현하는 소통방식의 어려움 내지는 불가능함을 보여줌으로써 역설적으로 타인과의 이해와 공감의 중요성을 강조한다.

Sherwood Anderson’s characters have intense inner passion and try to make meaningful contact with others in Winesburg Ohio. But their methods of expression, such as language and physical touch, cause misunderstanding and fail to gain sympathy. Especially in “Hands”, the first Winesburg tale, Anderson deals with Wing Biddlebaum’s problem of expression that includes the appropriate touch and felicitous words to show his feelings and thoughts.
The narrator of “Hands” emphasizes Wing’s alienation from the Winesburg society and implies the relationship between his isolation and his restless hands. When Wing was an effeminate schoolteacher in Pennsylvania, he tried to reach out to students and caressed their heads and shoulders with his hands as a means of nonverbal communication. But Wing’s creative passion to inspire students to dream has been thwarted as homosexuality by the irate townspeople.
Since then, his means of expression has been inhibited and his creativity has been trapped in Winesburg. Although Wing tries to admonish George earnestly not to be like others in town but to dream, he recalls the painful memory and feels frustrated again. In the final scene of this tale, by depicting Wing’s picking up bread crumbs in darkness, Anderson suggests that his hands are closely related with creative impulse and communication. Consequently, Anderson shows not only the importance but also the difficulty of communication and methods of expression.
