호비 바바의 혼종성과 『제스처 라이프』에 나타난 하타의 위장 전략

국문 초록 (Abstract)

호비 바바가 의미하는 혼종성은 두 문화에 의해 형성되는 양극단의 경계를 허무는 중간적 공간의 개념을 지닌다. 이러한 중간적 위치에서 혼종성은 지배문화와 ‘거의 동일하지만 똑같지 않은’ 모방의 결과물을 낳는다. 지배문화가 피지배 문화에게 강요하는 동화된 정체성이 불가능하게 됨으로써 혼종성을 통한 모방의 결과물은 식민지 종속의 전략을 무력화 시키고 근원적으로 저항의 응시로 작용한다. 이러한 의미로 볼 때 바바의 혼종성은 그 안에 지배 문화를 겨냥한 전투적 개념의 위장 전략을 포함한다.
『제스처 라이프』의 주인공 하타는 한국, 일본, 미국 국적을 차례로 취하는 과정에서 이러한 혼종성을 취하는 것 같이 보인다. 하지만 하타는 궁극적으로 혼종적 정체성을 전략적으로 이용해 피억압자이지만 동시에 억압자의 위치로 오르고자 하는 동화주의자의 지배욕망을 보인다. 두 문화 사이에 형성된 중간적 위치에서 혼종성을 통한 위장을 한다는 점은 유사하지만, 바바의 혼종성과 하타의 혼종성은 궁극적으로 위장의 대상에서 정 반대의 차이를 보인다.
본 논문은 바바의 혼종성과 위장의 개념을 하타의 동화 전략에서 발견되는 위장 전략과 비교하여 분석한다. 이를 통해 지배 문화에 대한 저항과 위장의 개념인 바바의 혼종성과는 반대로 하타는 혼종성의 공간에서 자신이 몸담고 있는 피지배 문화에 대한 위장을 펼치고 있음을 분석한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Homi Bhabha’s concept of hybridity explains the in-between position situated between the polarities of two cultures, the dominant and the dominated. This hybridity creates “a subject of a difference that is almost the same, but not quite,” which prevents the dominant from imposing the distorted and assimilated identity on the dominated, ultimately and inevitably helping the dominated to turn the resistant gaze toward the dominant. Bhabha’s hibridity implies the strategic and combatant camouflage aiming at the dominant.
Hata, the protagonist of A Gesture Life, seems to be a man of this combatant hybridity as proves his struggle for better ethnic identities from Korean to Japanese, and then American. Hata, however, manipulates his multiple ethnic identity in an attempt only to rise from the status of the oppressed to that of the oppressor. Bhaba’s and Hata’s hybridity go in the complete opposite direction. This study analyzes how Hata’s hybridity and camouflage in pursuit of the upward mobility, contrary to those of Bahaba, work against the dominated to which he belongs, not the dominant.
