The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of achievement goal orientation and attribution type on intrinsic motivation among highschool track and field athletes.
Track and field athletes from 14 sports high school in Korea responded the questionnaire and statistical analyses such as factor analysis with principal components, varimax with normalization, descriptive analysis, analysis of variance, simple regression analysis, multiple regression analysis, path analysis, and logistic regression analysis were performed.
The results showed :
1) There were significant differences in achievement goal orientation depending on the athletes' demographics.
2) Task-disposition influenced the success attribution while Both task- and self-disposition influenced the failure attribution.
3) Task- and self-disposition also influenced the intrinsic motivation while the amount of the influence was higher with task-disposition.
4) Among the sub-variables of the success attribution, mental strength, luck, opponent analysis significantly influenced the intrinsic motivation. On the other hand, only self-contentment of the failure attribution influence the intrinsic motivation.
5) Overall, the success attribution and the task-disposition were the most significant variables influencing intrinsic motivation.
6) The intrinsic motivation driven from the achievement goal orientation and the attribution types influenced the athletic performance. Especially, gender, national team experience, and the intrinsic motivation could best explain the athletic performance.
