This study aimed to identify the level of sleep hygiene among newly hired nurses working rotating shifts and to examine the factors influencing their sleep hygiene. This was a descriptive survey study. Data were collected from September 1, 2025 to May 20, 2026, using both online and offline self-administered questionnaires. The participants consisted of 168 newly hired nurses with less than one year of clinical experience who were employed at general hospitals or university hospitals with 300 or more beds located in Metropolitan City D. Sleep hygiene, job stress, fatigue, social jetlag, and resilience were measured using validated instruments. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics 29.0 through descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Scheffé post-hoc tests, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression analysis.
The main results of the study were as follows:
1. The mean total score for sleep hygiene was 72.73±17.47 (range 28-168), job stress was 42.43±11.16, fatigue was 76.39±16.12, social jetlag was 1.85±1.16 hours, and resilience was 109.69±15.65.
2. Sleep hygiene scores differed significantly according to alcohol consumption frequency, caffeine intake, and job satisfaction. Sleep hygiene showed significant positive correlations with job stress (r=.487, p〈.001) and fatigue (r=.490, p〈.001), and a significant negative correlation with resilience (r=-.313, p〈.001). Social jetlag, however, showed no statistically significant correlation with any of the variables, including sleep hygiene.
3. The factors significantly influencing sleep hygiene among newly hired nurses were age (β=.19, p=.006), home ownership as a type of residence (β=.17, p=.026), alcohol consumption frequency (no drinking: β=-.18, p=.036; one to two times per month: β=-.24, p=.005), caffeine intake of one to two times per month (β=-.20, p=.015), general ward as work unit (β=-.22, p=.005), job stress (β=.28, p=.011), and fatigue (β=.29, p=.003). These variables explained 45.5% of the variance in sleep hygiene (Adj. R²=.455).
These findings indicate that sleep hygiene among newly hired nurses working rotating shifts is influenced not only by individual characteristics, lifestyle habits, and work environment, but also by job stress and fatigue. Notably, job stress and fatigue remained significant independent predictors of sleep hygiene even after controlling for other variables. These results suggest that improving sleep hygiene in newly hired nurses requires an integrated intervention strategy that combines tailored sleep hygiene education reflecting the demands of rotating shift work with organizational approaches to alleviate job stress and manage fatigue. Given that this study was conducted with a regional sample using a cross-sectional design, future research with larger and more diverse samples is warranted to confirm and extend these findings.
